ECUADOR THE CHILD CARNIVALAdd to Cart Add to Lightbox Download
In Ecuador, the Carnival is not only celebrated with dancing, foam, water and parades. This traditional celebration has its religious tinge with the popular Mass of the 'Carnival Child'.
The custom dictates that every year a prioste is chosen, who is the person in charge of offering the party in honor of the 'Divine child', which begins with a mass. In the Santa Rita neighborhood, in the south of Quito, this year the honor of giving the party fell on Daysi Tito.
The young woman prepared a whole year to organize the celebration, which includes comparsas parading through the main streets of the neighborhood, food, dancing by an orchestra, liquor and much joy.
At the end of the opening dance of the party, the prioste must deliver the 'Little Boy' to the host of the following year's festivities. Thus, the traditional celebration goes from generation to generation.
This tradition is repeated in every corner of the country and the organization varies according to the sector. It can be by neighborhood, parishes, families, communes or workers from the same place.
